We run sessions for Oxfordshire’s year 6’s. They must deal with a real to life situation happening in front of them and they all get chance to make a practice emergency call using an inhouse 999 system.
We are always looking at how to improve and update our safety centre – which is on the top floor of Rewley Road Fire Station, next to the train station. We work in partnership with the police, railway companies, fire service, etc,
We get schools from across the county and run for 13 weeks in the year. Approximately 5,000 children visit us over the year and we teach them what to do if they were faced with a real emergency or how to keep themselves safe in general day to day living. For example they enter a room and there is a person lying on the train track and in the distance you can see a train coming – do you go on the track and save the person?
Our volunteers need to be enthusiastic, want to talk to people, have good spoken English and are keen to be part of a fun and lively team. We provide as much tea and coffee as you can drink and will arrange for a DBS check to be done for you.
No experience is needed as all training will take place at the safety centre.
The sessions run from 9.30 – 11.30am and 12.30 – 2.30pm so you would be required on site 9am until 2.45pm. The children go around the rooms in no more than 6 in a group and spend 12 minutes in each room. There are 8 scenarios for them to deal with.
If you don’t like the thought of being face to face with the children but would like to help then you may be able to answer the telephone as an emergency phone operator.
